Chapter Seven

“So,” he asked, “are you going to forgive me?”

Jed didn’t realize how important her answer was until she shrugged her shoulders and replied, “There’s nothing to forgive.”

But since she still wouldn’t look at him, he wasn’t fooled into believing her. About to plead his case again, he was interrupted by a cowboy halting in front of them.

“Hey, Beth, how about a dance?”

Jed squared his shoulders, wanting to protest but knowing better. Beth had the right to dance with anyone she wished. She accepted the invitation with a smile.

He slumped into his chair, his gaze fixed on Beth’s long bare legs, her small waist emphasized by the silver belt, her dark hair curling on her shoulders. Her pink nails.

Her pink nails? Damn, she’d gotten a manicure.

“Regretting your decision?” Sissy Stallings asked, sliding into the chair next to him.

He hadn’t seen her since they’d arrived, and he’d forgotten about the supposed reason for his bringing Beth to the dance. “Nope.”

“Why isn’t she dancing with you?”

“Because the guy asked her to dance. Why aren’t you dancing?” As far as he could tell, the men outnumbered the ladies at least two to one. And Sissy, even if she was bitchy, was a beauty.

“I was looking for you. Come on, join me.” She stood and held out her hand.

He didn’t want to. He knew he shouldn’t. But Beth hadn’t hesitated to sashay onto the floor with another cowboy. He stood and led Sissy to the dance floor.

The fast music made it easy to maneuver Sissy across the floor next to Beth and her partner. He kept his eye on Beth and knew the moment she caught sight of him and Sissy. She stiffened, then raised her chin and stared at him.

“What are you looking at?” Sissy asked, twisting her head in the same direction. “Oh, hi, Beth, Billy.”

Jed wasn’t going to back off now. He turned loose of Sissy and tapped Billy on the shoulder. “Trade partners.” Then he pulled Beth out of her partner’s arms and wrapped his around her. He didn’t look back to see if Billy took Sissy as his partner. She was a big girl. She could take care of herself.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

He smiled down at the delicate rigid features. “I’m claiming my partner, sweetheart. You’re the one who suggested we come together. The least you can do is dance with me.”

“If I dance only with you, we’ll be engaged before the night is over,” she snapped.

“Well, I don’t want to go that far, but a little friendliness wouldn’t be amiss.” He didn’t think his sin was so serious she should avoid him. And she felt good in his arms.

Pulling her more tightly against him, he laid his cheek on the top of her head, taking in the delicate scent of her hair.

“Jed.”

“Mmm-hmm?” he answered, savoring the feel of her.

“You’re holding me too close,” she complained, but her voice was breathless rather than irritated.

“This kind of dance requires it.” Or maybe his heart required it. No. Not his heart.
